(ASCEND) 56K digital modems on a Max1800

We just got an 8-modem 56K digital modem card for our Max 1800. We want to
use the Max to replace an old NetBlazer that we have. I updated the Max
firmware to 5.0Ap33 and installed the modems, but the modems can't seem to
dial out and don't answer when I try to dial in from an analog line. We've
been using the Max strictly for ISDN connections for over a year now and
that part still seems to be working OK. I can't find any instructions on
setting up the digital modems, so I'm assuming that there isn't anything to
be done. I can connect to the modems using the "open" command from the
terminal server and issue AT commands, the status display shows the
outgoing call, but less than 10 seconds later the call is terminated and I
get "NO CARRIER". I tried dialing our NetBlazer this way and the call
never made it to the modems on the NetBlazer. Am I missing something?
