(ASCEND) Should I use a Pipeline for this?

Heres the scenario:
I'm a college student living off campus with a few friends. We need to
get our computers connected to the net. I have an 8-port hub and we are all
connected to it with ethernet cards.

Currently, I have an Ascend Netwarp Pro in my machine. I'm running
Windows 95. I am running a proxy server and connecting to our ISP at 64k
where I receive a dynamically assigned IP. It's the most inconsistant,
buggy, unreliable setup I've ever seen in my entire life. I have a
relatively stable connection ONLY when I don't load the proxy server and
remove the TCP/IP drivers on the ethernet card. And even then, throughput
drops to a crawl when I have more than one telnet session open.
When I have TCP/IP on the dial-up adapter and the 3com Etherlink III and
the proxy server running, many times I register a connection to the ISP but
only receive about 272 bytes of data, then nothing. I have to disconnect
and try again. Rebooting seems to increase my chances. Sometimes, I'm
connected, and the connection effectively dies (I am not able to access
anything). I even got one situation where any web address I typed in just
reloaded my "home" page (in IE 4.0). I am dialing in to an Ascend Max or a
Max TNT (no idea what model or firmware release).

Now for the real question... Since this setup utterly fails to meet my
needs, what do I need to get to make it work? I was thinking of setting up
one of our old 486's as a Linux machine and using that to connect and run IP
Masquerading, but I can't do that with a Netwarp (unless one of you guys
wants to contact Karsten Keil and offer to write NI-1 support for his HiSax
driver).

I am thinking of trying to pick up a P15, but I don't know if/how to get
it working with Linux. I'm open to any suggestions, but I'm on a tight
budget! Also, I have no loyalty to Ascend, so if you know of another
product that would better suit my needs, I'm interested!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
