Well - I work for a telephone company - I have a slightly different view. :) Carrier-class isn't about growth - it's about managing an access commodity. Part of that is doing access very, very, very well. You pick up the phone, and get a dial tone, 24 hours per day. You can call wherever you like, and always get through. Your bill always adds up straight - unless someone made a typo on a credit or set up your account wrong. Often telcos choose vendors because they trust the vendor, rather than the product. Personally, I think Nortel make junk rather than access servers. But the name Northen Telecom means a lot to our switch guys. But - while our switch vendor (NEC) may have its share of problems, and our NEAXes may not be perfect, the point is - we can contract to say, "this feature will be available and working correctly by 1 Jan, if not NEC will pay us $5000/day until it is." As a result - things get fixed. We can run a business. Our customers can rely on the service. Ascend must understand how carriers manage risks and run their businesses, rather than concentrating exclusively on what kind of media to use at the cable plant. If Ascend can make a carrier-class product...
