I cannot make my MAX 2000 ... do anything. :) Right now I simply want it to talk to the leased T-1 line via the external CSU/DSU. I did get a cable finally which seems to work in connecting it to the external CSU/DSU, but I now have two problems. First, there isn't anything appropriate to set in the connection profile for the speed of connection, so it says 64000. I guess I should just ignore this figure - isn't the speed of the V.35 port controlled by the CSU/DSU? The other problem is that I can't get it to route anything over the serial line. I have a cisco 2501 on the other end of the line and the two are supposed to connect using PPP. I don't know how to configure the IP addresses on the WAN link, however. The two are supposed to inhabit a /30 subnet and communicate via PPP, with the MAX being 199.35.194.34 and the Cisco being 199.35.194.33. There is a class C on the other side of the Max on the Ethernet interface, and on the other cide of the Cisco everything... works. :) I tried setting the "LAN address" to 199...33/30 and the "IF address" to 199...34/30, and everything looks okay, but I can't ping the cisco. In the routing table I have the default route set with the cisco as the gateway on wan0, but I don't see an actual route to the cisco in there. There's host routes to 127.0.0.x and to 199...34 (my address on the /30), and the /24 route to the class C, but nothing to the /30 subnet. I would expect a route to the /30 subnet on the wan0 interface and the default route with the cisco as gateway also on that interface. I also tried setting the "Lan address" to the cisco and the IF address to my ethernet address, and setting "WAN alias" to the address on the /30 I have been assigned. That looks okay too, but it still doesn't work. And I tried reversing the assignments, just for kicks, and that didn't work either. I don't really have any way of knowing for sure whether the PPP link is even being established properly, since I don't have access to the cisco. There doesn't appear to be any status display on the Max where I can determine the PPP status. The message log said connection established, but it does that even if the MAX isn't connected to the CSU/DSU at all, so I don't consider it very reliable indicator. :) But I did use the debugging commands and I can verify that SOMETHING is happening on the WAN link. (Also the little light goes on on the CSU/DSU ;) ) About 1 (small) packet per second, or a little more, goes each way on the link. But without picking apart the PPP protocol, I don't really know what they're doing. :) Am I doing something obviously wrong? Do all PPP connections have to be a host route, and the joke's on me (and the guy on the other end)? Is it just not possible to connect an external CSU/DSU to the v.35 port, and the joke's REALLY on me? Any suggestions? I'm using 5.0Ap11, because that's what it came with. I'll upgrade as soon as I can make the link work well enough to download new software. I eventually plan to run OSPF over this link, but right now I have neither RIP nor OSPF configured. But I doubt that would interfere with simple pinging the router over the link. ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com To get FAQ'd: <http://www.nealis.net/ascend/faq>

Follow-Ups:

Re: (ASCEND) my idiocy knows no bounds

From: Andre Novaes Cunha <andre.cunha@br.global-one.net>

 References:

Re: (ASCEND) Pipeline 220

From: Jason Nealis <nealis@babylon.erols.com>

Prev by Date: Re: (ASCEND) K56..

Next by Date: Re: (ASCEND) Max 5.0Ap36

Prev by thread: Re: (ASCEND) Pipeline 220

Next by thread: Re: (ASCEND) my idiocy knows no bounds

Index(es):

Main

Thread
