(ASCEND) Stable Code Issues - <rant>
4:00am Pacific Time
<rant>
Well here I am once again... called in to the office, because a customer
cant stay connected from home. The customer also maintains a dedicated
connection to us from his company, and speaks of reconsidering his choice
of ISP. So last night I mentioned to the list that I was not going to continue
my fight with the latest, greatest code for our TNT and 4K. Well, this morning
I sit here realizing an amusing dilemma.... I cant seem to recall a stable,
bug (feature) free, version of code for quite some time.
OK, I guess I will turn to the notes and comments of my colleges, hm...
lets see, no, no,not that one, no, hah....oh....never mind, no, nope.....
you get the point.
As I look at the Ascend web site, I recall a time when I thought that the
Incrementals were the post beta, ironing it out track, and the releases
were for adding pre-ironed features, and occasional patch (or feature
removal) when things slipped through the cracks (that's technology),
leaving the last minor revision in a series, bullet proof for that feature
set.
Well, I've taken a look at the beta, but somehow I don't feel to confident
with a beta when the regular code is starting to loose customers and
effect the reputation of my company. The current link from the web site
for the "Max Family" contains 6.1.0 of code, not 6.1.2, with no notes to
explain why. Through 8 versions of 6xx code there should be at least one
that could be considered stable, the new features don't necessarily mean
much to our existing customers who are dependant on old features.
Is a solid version of code too much to ask? It may not have V90, but
it would be nice is my MPP Ascend pipeline connected customers
could keep both channels up(example). I understand that several separate
technologies are all rolling down the hill at once, and i'm sure there are
headaches greatly larger than my own, but while the progression is
necessary, so is the consistency. Lately we have had the overwhelming
feeling of being an extension of the beta lab.
The thought of backing from TAOS, and having to later move forward
again, is not one which I look forward to. As the morning continues I
will continue to figure out the best option of code.
I look forward to being able to again proudly, and confidently protest
"We use Ascend products, they're the best", but that's not how this
office feels currently. Ah... here cones the sun.

Anyone (who's made it this far) with STABLE code recommendations
for the 4048 and TNT doing IP only ppp/mpp/STAC Analog/ISDN/T1
your post is appreciated.
