Re: (ASCEND) Mac Users
I had similar problems when Clark was using 5.x. However when I called
through a toll facility the connection was established immediately and
worked fine. I also had problems connecting at 14.4K!
Clarks's solution was the comma trick, but why did I buy a 56k modem to
connect at 28.8K?
With the cooperation of Bell Atlantic, Rockwell and Global Village I found
out the following:
My local switch for the 997 exchange is a Northern Telcom DMS100 which
digitallly connected to a ATT (Lucent now) 5ess switch to which the Maxes
were connected.
The problem simply stated is that the signal compression algorithmms used
by the DMS100 changed the signal characteristics of the signal sufficiently
that the connection would be dropped soon after the carrier was detected by
both modems.
The Pad used by the AT&T toll circuits identified these "Digital
Imparements" and corrected them. Hence the ability to connect via the toll
circuits.
Rockwell's V.90 code has a better signal prossessing algorithm that
corrects for this problem. Since I have been using V.90 ( I had to bully
clark to install it since they were understandably reluctant to install
6.0) I connect relaibly at the V.90 speeds.
The GV script in use uses a matching scheme to determine the DTE speed and
since the v.90 speeds are 28.8K+8000/6 to 56K,
The script usually reports "unknown speed", but I have confirmed the speeds
are usually greater than 48000.
Stick in 6.1... and the problmes will go away if your customers put in the
v.90 upgrade.
