This is garbage. The 4048 configuration is "fixed/broken" not because of any
design in the hardware. It's because Ascend WON'T sell hash codes to do the
upgrade.

About a year ago, I had a Max 4004 with 3 PRIs and 72 modems go belly up. I
could smell the smoke residue as soon as I walked into the room. Since I had
a spare 4004 chasis sitting around, I just pulled the modem cards out of the
dead one and plugged them into the spare. By the time you see the smoke,
it's too late to turn it back off! After banging my head on the wall for 5
or 10 minutes, I called Ascend and arranged to have 2 4004 chasis and 6
modem cards arrive the next day (Friday). Monday, when the 3 boxes arrived I
popped the modem cards in, set the IP address, TFTPed the software version
we were using at the time and finally trestored the configuration. That was
when I noticed that there were only 2 PRI status windows showing up instead
of 4. When I looked at the back of the box, sure enough, it said MAX 4048!
To make a long story longer, instead of shipping me 2 new boxes, they gave
me hash codes to enter that made the replacement 4048 work like a 4004.

This is also garbage. Last month for various reasons, I swapped modems
between a MAX 4000 with 48 modems (6x8 cards) and a newly arrived MAX 4048
with 48 modems (3x16 cards). Both maxen are working just fine.
