Re: (ASCEND) 185's and 11's?
Where were you guys last month when we posted this problem? No one from this
list reponded, and we subsequently gave up. Here's why...
First of all, we do not generate the traffic numbers you are reporting,
however, the proportions of 185's and 11's are the same as is the complaint
from subscribers - random disconnects. We verified the random disconnects
ourselves by using a Hayes 56K modem and dialing into our MAX, both which
terminate at the same central office (this eliminated the suspicion of
inter-office trunking problems at the phone company).
We were running a single MAX 4004 with K56flex modem cards and software
version 5.0Ap42 when the problem stated.
Our first call to Ascend technical support resulted with the recommendation
to upgrade to 5.0Ap46 which we did, and it did not fix the problem. We tried
other MAX PRI line input ports as well thinking that the internal CSU/DSU's
were the problem - they were not - the problem persisted. Then, we contacted
our local telephone company who tested the PRI at our end and at the central
office with a T-BERD (test equipment to detect the bit-error-rate on the PRI)
continuously for four days with only 3 bad packets detected during that time.
The PRI was deemed 'clean'.
For weeks, thereafter, Ascend's only advice after given this data was to
exchange our 4004 chassis at a cost of $1,000+ to 'see' if that fixes the
problem...ugh! We were not willing to gamble $1,000+ to experiment on
Ascend's behalf and, consequently, gave up.
So, the problem continues and we believe it's a problem with the MAX. We were
hoping others would have similar experiences to back up our claims, and it
looks like we might be vindicated. Hopefully, with your apparent rapport with
Ascend, we can both get the answers we're looking for. Thanks for your
