(ASCEND) Problem upgrading Pipeline 25
Hi all.
I've recently acquired a Pipeline 25-fx.
I suspect that someone (not me, I /read/ the upgrade
instructions!!) has already attempted to update the
software by skipping a version or two.
The unit says that it's at version 4.6C.
Any attempt to perform an NVRAMCLEAR, enter the hash
codes or tload an update results in a a series of
'P25NVRAM: flash erase failed E28F008SA' message,
followed by a series of 'flash write failed' messages.
The unit will not load the software via the Xmodem-1K
protocol from the 'Esc[Esc-' key sequence either. It
gets quite a long way into the load, then errors, sometimes
with a message that it couldn't write some location inside
the flash memory area (400000-5FFFFF, 40FFFC is reported).
A little experimentation found the debug jumper (P1 on
this unit, in case anyone else is trying to find this info
in the archives), but attempting to load the software via
the serial port doesn't work - it errors very quickly.
The 'ef' (erase flash) command in the debug monitor also
reports errors.
Ascend Tech Support assured me yesterday afternoon that I should
be able to perform a 'ef', ignore the error messages and perform
a 'df' and successfully download the software. But then, they
also blithely assured me that I could go straight from 4.6C
to 6.0.9, which appears to be totally at odds with the information
in the 5.0A release notes as well as various other places.
Does it sound like this unit is toast?
Is it worth attempting to repair it?
I wish to use ISDN with NAT on a small, unregistered LAN (4-5
machines). I _think_ from the release notes that the P25 /should/
be able to do many-to-one NAT with a suitable release of the software,
but I'd appreciate someone confirming that this is possible, as
otherwise I'll concentrate on the IBM Waverunner ISA card I picked
up for $35 together with an 7845 NT-1 (the P25 has an S interface).
Any advice appreciated - I'm converting my analog modem line into an
ISDN line, and I'd prefer a minimum of downtime...
Cheers,
AS
