(ASCEND) Overheating Maxen?
One of our maxen has been randomly resetting itself during peak times (not
always, but when it happens it always is at a peak time). We were getting
FE 29s but mostly just a bunch of "system is up" messages over and over,
as the unit resets itself:
SYSTEM IS UP: Index: 100 Load: fti.m40 Revision: 6.1.7
Date: 09/15/1998. Time: 21:04:33
Yesterday after one reboot, I got the following scary error:
SCADRV-6/x: Post failed
SCADRV-6/0: POST wrong frame count (TX 5, RX 0)
SCADRV-6/1: POST wrong frame count (TX 5, RX 0)

I am/was beginning to think that this was because the MAX is overheating,
the unit is running pretty hot in its right-hand modem bank (the bank
that's over the i960, if you're facing the rear of the ascend). We looked
at all the fans for blockage and spaced our MAXen farther apart to allow
cooling. We also have a large fan positioned in the front of the stack
that is now keeping this one and the other ones much cooler.
After taking the MAX apart, we were able to prove that all 3 fans were in
operation and that the inside of the case was surprisingly clean. We keep
our MAXen in a temperature controlled room (about 68 or so) and we now
have that fan to help things out even more.
It seems like all the heat is coming from that right-hand modem bank. We
tried a few card-swaps to see whether or not it was a particular card and
it does not appear to be but I don't know of a sure-fire way to tell.
It's definitely running a significant amount hotter than our other MAXen
but has never presented any problems until we upgraded to 6.1.7. In other
words, it's always run hot but lately it's been resetting. I can't tell
for sure if it's a capacity problem (since we're peaking much higher
lately) or a problem of some sort with 6.1.7 (is it possible that 6.1.7 is
more taxing on the modems/processor than 5.0Ap48?). I've been e-mailing
some of these details to support@ascend.com and have yet to get a
response.
One final detail, this is the oldest MAX we have (S/N 5290615) and from
the looks of it one of the oldest MAXen out there.
If anyone has any thoughts on what I might be able to do to rectify this
resetting situation I would certainly appreciate it.
Configuration info: 4 MAX 4000 series boxes, all with 4 PRIs each.
Stacking, OSPF turned on. One MAX is using v.90 cards, all others are
33.6. 2 PRIs per box are for modem and 2 are for ISDN. No other MAXen
are exhibiting this behavior. In fact the others appear to be working
quite nicely.
