Re: [(ASCEND) Win98 + ICMP + Demand Dial]

I am not sure why Win 98 is making those ICMP echo requests
but you may want to Ignore ICMP Redirects in pipeline 75
under the Ethernet->Mod Config menu and also turn off
Forward Directed Bcast = No and Reply DirectedBcast Ping = No.

The trace is telling me that this address may be coming from
PSI's customer.

I've had a P75 at home for the past year configured with the IP Call
filter on and dial-on-broadcast off. It has worked great for the last
year an a half with my W95 PC on the client side (at home).

I added a W98 PC to the mix this past weekend and noticed that my connection
started comming up about every 4 minutes. So I turned off all the MS client
stuff and made sure that TCP/IP was the only protocol bound to the ethernet
card but the connection continues to come up.

What I see when snooping the net are two ICMP ECHO packets with a destination
address of 149.1.1.1 going out, about 1 min apart, every four minutes. I've
successfully filtered this by adding to the IP Call Filter but I'm still
wondering what is sending out these packets.

Aside from W98 itself, the only apps installed are Netscape, Lotus SmartSuite,
Quicken 98 and some none network-based games all of which are shutdown when
the packets are being sent. A reverse-pointer look up on 149.1.1.1 comes up
empty (at least for me).

Anyone know what the source of this ping is?

Thanks,

Charlie Taylor

ps - Hope this is not a well known issue. I did a search and only came up
with netbios browsing issues which are not relevant here.
