missing "update" here, max doesn't recognize the line as anything but
garbage characters.

Sure looks like whatever means you used to communicate with the max sent
the ascii too fast for the max and thus got out of sync of the
command/return/response/command/return/response/command etc.
Each command should be in the form of:
update <blah blah blah text here> [return]
then the max/tnt/pipeline will respond with either:
update command: commmand complete
or
update command: invalid arg #!
So what you can do is either manually cut and paste the individual "update
xxx" lines one at a time into the diag/debug CLI or send at amuch slower
speed to the max. Good luck.
