So you're running in a direction.  The first time you 'hit' your friend,
you push him the other times, which occur a split second later, you
are attacking him.

Quick way to make dogmeat of your friends.

Mark's suggestion is the way to go.  You will not strike members of
your party.  Otherwise, things stay as they were.
