null pointer exception-java

I cannot remember, or maybe never really experinced, what a null pointer
exception. Basically what I am doing is I have 2 classes, one is kind of
a template and teh other is teh app. I create an object of the tmp class
to obvously use the methods from it in my app. Now, what the methods do
here is pull information from teh datbase and return it to my app. (and
I am probably doing more work than needed, but I am learning). My first
method pulls a number from teh DB and returns it as an int to my app,
I get a null pointer exception. I do check if the ResultSet was null and
if it is return 0. Any ideas? Thanks.
