Debugging client/server connections

I am involved with a client/server project. The client is written in perl and
the server is written in Java.

We are have a bear of a time debugging the protocol, so I thought we could
snoop on the socket and see what is going on.

I am using tcpdump, but it seems like major overkill and I'll admit I do not
know exactly what the output means. So, are there simple IP sniffers that
would help in this debugging process?
