When I was doing some RMI tinkering, it was 1099. However this was on
an NT box (I had not yet seen the light). Because there was no
standardization of RMI, there was no standard RMI port ever designated
(unlike IIOP). If you use RMI over IIOP, I believe the standard port
for IIOP is 1571 or at least it was when I was working with Iona's
OrbixWeb.
