need more ptys

I have a simple expect script to log me into a server, just now when I ran
it I got:

[lueyb@pclueyb bin]$ veblen
spawn telnet veblen.carleton.edu
The system has no more ptys.  Ask your system administrator to create 
more.
    while executing
"spawn telnet veblen.carleton.edu"
    (file "/home/lueyb/bin/veblen" line 46)
[lueyb@pclueyb bin]$                           

I just recompiled my kernel under 2.2.7 -- what does this mean and what do
I do?
