hmm.. a couple of ideas

'grep CDROM /var/log/dmesg' (see if it was detected on boot)

'modprobe ide-cd' (if your cd-rom uses a module)

poke around in the /proc/ide/ directory


*shrug*  I dunno..  Did you compile this kernel yourself?  Maybe (I know it's a
long shot) there isn't any IDE cdrom support built in.
