Hi, Bob. I agree that what you 've written deserves a wider auience. 
Take a chance and submit it to Slashdot- God knows they could use
a dose of calmness and maturity, especially after the latest outbreak
of idiocy in the herd over Unisys standing fast on its right to .LZW 
royalties. Too many Slashdotters seem to think that Linux *is*
strictly a GenX thing and forget there are folks who came of age.
in the 60s, 70s and 80s who are rassling with the beast.

I would like to take exception to one part of your essay, though.
While it isn't out yet, Corel's WordPerfect Office Suite is being
ported to Linux and should be available 1Q 2000, last I heard-
and from what I have heard, you can move documents into WP
from Word without losing anything of great significance. YMMV.
Quattro Pro is also supposed to allow conversion of Excel 
workbooks, but I guess we'll see how that works. Either way,
M$FT Office will have legitimate competition for the office desktop
again. [Disclaimer: I do own stock in Corel, but I don't flack for them.]
