Authentication with Apache/1.3.9?

  Hi,

I've never tried using .htaccess files with any recent version of
apache. I'm trying to implement it now, and no matter what I do, it'sa not
brinigng up a password box. Just lets anyone through. I've setup .htaccess
and htpasswd as per specs and docs, but to no avail. 

I figured maybe 1.3.9 needs an 'auth' module loaded, but I can't find
that, either! I do have a mod_auth.o though... anyone?
