Adaptec, and get the ultra2 wide kind (with matching disks). Yes, it's
expensive, but disk i/o is your bottleneck, not the CPU, as we've seen.
Skimp on CPU, get plenny o' RAM, and get kick-butt disks (IBM u2w 10k
RPM).

If you get SCSI tape, don't put it on the same controller as the HDD(s). I
have it from a good source (my former boss) that that can slow down your
whole SCSI bus.
