I tried to use the logging option on "-l", for the lpd, and saw this in
my syslog.

Dec 30 13:37:01 mystar lpd[9189]: mystar requests printjob lp
Dec 30 13:37:02 mystar lpd[9189]: restarting lp
Dec 30 13:37:33 mystar last message repeated 35 times
Dec 30 13:38:34 mystar last message repeated 71 times
Dec 30 13:39:35 mystar last message repeated 70 times
Dec 30 13:40:36 mystar last message repeated 70 times

The testparm command gives this portion of info for the printer.

<other stuff deleted>
Processing section "[printer1]"
doing parameter printable = yes
doing parameter printer = lp
doing parameter read only = yes
doing parameter guest ok = yes
pm_process() returned Yes
No path in service printer1 - using /tmp
Loaded services file OK.
