compiling vs. RPM

Hey *,

I'd like to install Zope on a machine on my network. Incidentally, very
cool. Check out http://www.zope.org/

I've already got python 1.5.1 installed on this machine via RPM (RedHat
6). I haven't found an RPM of 1.5.2 yet (required for Zope) and I wouldn't
mind compiling my own.

Is it safe to 'rpm -e python' and then go ahead and compile the python
source? I may do the same procedure for Apache.
