I realize that it is late in the discussion, but here are my two.

Download transfer speeds are great.  I've had up to 300kB/sec in the
wee hours.  

They don't like to give the externals out to PC users, because those
are in short supply as they are the only ones mac users can use.  You
can get around this by telling them that you will have to remove your
modem from your PC to free up an IRQ or slot.  (The internal version
needs to use your already resident modem for up-stream transfer).

As an added bonus to this little misrepresentation of facts, if you are
put on a waiting list for the external modem, they will waive the
installation fee ($100).
