6.0 install on 540 meg drive?????

Problem:

P60 packard bell with 540 meg drive.  Put 5.1 only on this machine.  Now
upgrading to 6.0 and it will not fit on the 540 megs.  Redhat supports
states that I have to have a bigger drive.  Basic install needs 700+ megs.  

Fix:

Is it possible, and if so - the recipe, to force a very useable install of
6.0 to take less than 540 megs of space?  The machine is on a network and
can get most productivity software from the server.  I do want Gnome on it,
though.
