Error booting linux on Zenith Z-Star 433VL Notebook

I am having problems getting loadlin to work on my laptop. I have the
UMSDOS filesystem all unzipped into place, and I use the linux.bat file as
follows:

loadlin 3mide.030 root=/dev/hda2 rw

to load the image on my dos D: hdd. When I do I get the following:

Partition check:
 hda:hda: status error: status=0x01 { Error }
hda: status error: error=0x040 { UncorrectableError }, CHS=0/0/1, sector=0
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00, sector 0
hda: drive not ready for command
 unable to read partition table
attempt to access beyond end of device
03:02: rw=0, want=1, limit=0
FAT bread failed
UMSDOS Beta 0.6 (compatibility level 0.4, fast msdos)
attempt to access beyond end of device
03:02: rw=0, want=1, limit=0
FAT bread failed

The attempt to access beyond end of device lines repeat, then:

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:02

I have tried an FDISK /MBR in DOS to see if it was not a problem with the
boot sector in dos, but this did not help. I had the same problem when
trying to install straight to disk using a linux partition and a boot disk,
(which made me try the UMSDOS file system install).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
