FTP can't see files that start with .

Has this happened to anyone?  When I FTP into a Linux box I can't see 
"invisible" files (ones that start with a ".")  I used to be able to but 
something changed and now I can't.  I've tried it with both wsFTP on 
Windows NT and gFTP on Redhat.  I can ftp in from a command line and see 
the files by doing an "ls -la" but I'm more comfy with a 
gui.  Unfortunately I'm not root on this box so I can't check the FTP 
settings.  The admin didn't have any ideas, do any of you guys?
