Compiling the kernel -- AS86 ??

I'm leaping off into the great unknown:  compiling my first kernel.
However, I seem to be missing something:  The last line on my 'make
bzImage' indicates that it failed to find a file by the name of 'as86'
which I was able to figure out is an assembler.  The compiler I'm using is
the latest egcs package (1.1.2-24).  Should it have been installed as part
of this package?  It doesn't appear to be the case...  Not according to
'rpm -ql egcs|grep as86' anyway.

Apparently I missed something during my custom install of Mandrake 6.1.
Any idea what package (RPM) contains this elusive file?
