I find that if a piece of software compiles, then it is
almost guaranteed to work.  Whereas RPM packages,
since they weren't compiled on *my* system, tend to
fail in strange and unusual ways.

Thanks, Daniel. That pretty much sums up what I've come up with so far as
reasoning for a source-based Linux distribution--especially #2 above. I'll
echo Daniel: anyone else?
