Re: [TCLUG:16456] X on a Remote Server

VNC works. It's free. But you're linux box will do ALL of the work. All that
VNC really does is send screenshots to the viewer (kinda like PC Anywhere)
but VNC really kicks ass for lazy system admins who don't want to wander
around the office to fix every little problem people are having (Thanks
^chewie!). And hey, it's free and you can shove it over an ssh tunnel. (Bug
^chewie, I have it written down, at the office...)

X-win 32 is ok, can be run as a standard XDMCP client or as just a server
and let DISPLAY or SSH forwarding handle it. As long as you're ok with a 2
hour time out. At least you get an unlimited number of 2 hour sessions.

Xwin Pro works REALLY freaking well. Again, you can have it do XDMCP or just
forward stuff over ssh or whatever. Downside is it's only go for 30 days
(but no timeout) Lookie what I was up to at my old job on a boring day of
tech support. http://www.ringworld.org/~zibby/Screenshots/AtWork.jpg GIMP
actually took the screen shot. Neat.

Avoid MI/X . Unless you're really in love with TWM. You're choice with MI/X
is telnet to a server and set your display enviorment, or have some real fun
setting up the forwards manually. I never really got it working myself.

As far as ssh clients go, Tera Term Pro works rather well. Follow the link
and do the tic to it's pattern and you're colors will look somewhat decent
in it. Beware of the keyboard mapping, it can be funky on anything besides
the standard letters, numbers (page up/page down, delete, num keypad are all
mapped wrong)

SecureCRT is pretty nice since it supports SSH, SSH2, and telnet all in one
client.

F-secure SSH is the best SSH client I've found. There's some GPL code in it
somewhere...and it supports the keyboard and vt100 PROPERLY and FULLY.
Downside is the cost. If you have to do ssh from windows constantly though,
get it.

I think I've said enough....
