        it's used on most systems today because win9x needs it. it is *not*
the better method, and indeed will cause you headaches if you try a
complicated partitioning scheme. I learned this during a RH 6.0 install,
where I would partition and choose packages; but then it complained that it
couldn't mount the partitions. after several tries, I realized that one of
the drives was still in LBA mode; and after changing it to 'Normal' mode (on
some machines this will be said as "Non-Windows mode" or on old ones: "OS/2
mode"), everything worked fine.
        also turns out that NT wants regular mode; and won't recognize more
than 8GB of disk if it's in LBA mode. (I wonder if they've fixed this in
recent versions? I hope they've fixed it to at least build a c: partition >
4GB.) My last experience with NT was NT4sp1; so things may have changed
since then.
