Well, you may be missing the C Library headers. If you're running a
RedHat-ish distribution, you need to get the appropriate
glibc-devel-<blah> packages.
Also, you need the right -devel packages for many other programs (like X
Windows includes, GTK/Gnome includes, etc.)
