I don't know if anybody's mentioned this yet, but the strongest reason for
learning vi is that it's universal. Whether you're using HP-UX or Solaris
or a 1987 AT&T PC/UX, you've got vi. Emacs can almost make that claim, but
no other text editor really can.
If nothing else, it may inspire your students to study programming until
they have the skills to write an easier-to-use editor...
