I have never used the 'make install' step. The one thing that I didn't
see you mention is running 'lilo' after you copied the new kernel to it's
proper location.
Editing lilo.conf does not actually accomplish anything unless you execute
lilo afterwards...
If you already knew this and skipped that point 'cause it was a given,
forgive me for my stupidity.
