yeah, I'll recommend Xconfigurator as well...it should be able to get you up and
running with at least an 8bit setup.

The no valid modes found stuff just means that it (X) tried to start up with
various modes (resolution, bit depth, etc) and didn't find one that the chip
could support.

You might want to capture the output from starting up X and send that to
us...the whole thing should contain info as to why each of the modes was thrown
out...
