Well, I've got two hdds, and it happens when writing to either of them - I
thought it wwas the HDD's problem at one time, so I checked. Also, I've
got a SCSI Plextor CD-R on, and it doesn't happen when reading from
THAT. It's also faster than the x40 IDE drive, but Plextor drives have a
problem with unbalanced CDs, and I figured I might as well read from the
regular CDROM and use the CD-R for, well, CD-R.

That DOES sound like you have a drive problem. I've had a few 4.3 drives,
and now have an 8.4 and a 15gb and none of them had any problems getting
mke2fs'd... in fact, the 8.4 got repartitioned/reformatted about 30 times
in one weekend when I needed examples for a book...
