More on X and XDM

Okay I figured out how to run X "remotely" or at least have the server on
one machine and the client on another. To Do so I'm using XDM. Is there
anyway to run xdm in the background? Like have it start, but run in the
background, so we don't have to leave it running on a virtual screen? Or
do we actually have to either run it as root or Boot into run level 5. If
runlevel 5 is neccessary, how much RAM is used?
Also I believe XDm uses UDP port 177?

Thanks!
