Fonts (again)

I think I've asked this before, but has anyone here ever done anything
with the METAFONT package? (which was used to generate the fonts for TeX,
IIRC) It looks like that program might possibly be a way to remove the
woes surrounding all of our ugly X Windows fonts. However, if this is
true, then people have managed to avoid it for a long time (My renewed
interest in METAFONT was spurred by reading a TeX and METAFONT book
printed in December, 1979..)

Anyway, if I can ever figure out how to do it, I'm probably going to run
around making piles of fonts that work at 118 dpi (the resolution of my
display at home), and maybe some other resolutions that I come across
frequently (like whatever I'll be running at work once I get a decent
video card..)
