The 2.3/2.4 Linux kernel implements shared memory using a filesystem. 
I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of that is, but someone thought it
was a good idea...  It's much like procfs (the filesystem used in /proc)
or devfs (a new system that can be used for all of those files in the
/dev directory) in which the files being used don't actually exist on a
physical medium.
