ctrl+alt+num plus	next resolution under X
ctrl+alt+num minus	prior resolution under X
ctrl+alt+backspace	kill X server

ctrl+alt+fn when under X, switches you to text console where "n" is text
console #1-6 
alt+f7 return to X after switching to text console

startx and try them out.  They're difficult to do on a laptop thought.

these can be used for viewing lengthy files, but pagers work better
(more/less):
ctrl+s does a scroll lock
ctrl+q restarts screen scrolling again

ctrl+sysrq switches between current console and prior one
