The main point is that the SET process "guarantees" security, relatively
speaking.  Also, it may become a standard method, but yes, if you pay for the
AmEx, VISA/MC or Discover connection, you can run them manually and get the
numbers through some other method.  It may actually be cheaper to use SET if
you process small numbers of transactions.  You have to remember that there are
costs associated with acquiring and using the equipment over time.
