I think that you can enable the APM stuff in the kernel.  I
seem to remember one of the options as being "Power off on
shutdown".  What it does for me on my laptop, is when I type
"shutdown -h now" or whatever, when it's done cleaning up,
it will physically power itself off.

This may be dependant on your bios supporting APM....I'm not
sure though...

Is that what you're looking for, or did I misunderstand the
question (I'm good at that...8D...).
