Re: [TCLUG:2368] Connecting Windows to Internet through Linux

I had the (mis)pleasure of using the MS Proxy at my past job. The HTTP
proxy is
fine, but that's all it is...an HTTP proxy. If you want to do _anything_
other than HTTP, you need to install the "Winsock Proxy" client on 95/NT
boxes. Essentially, this puts a new tcpip.dll on your machine which
automatically sends _everything_ to the proxy server to be forwarded to
the internet. The only cool thing about it is that you can control who has
access to what types of traffic, and it's pretty easy to configure. Thus,
if I want the IS dept. to have ftp access, but not the marketing dept., I
can do it pretty easily. The BIG PITA is that of course MS won't make a
client for the Mac or UNIX of any sort, so no one with a Mac in our office
could do any ftp or log into their personal e-mail with a POP client.
Understandibly, a number of people had some serious complaints...

I use IP_Masq at home and LOVE it. I originally set it up in preparation
for DSL, but I won't be able to get it until sometime late next spring at
least. It still works cool with my modem, though there isn't really enough
bandwidth to share between multiple computers...
