Really? I can't say for sure what they're running but I don't think it's
NT5.

Yes, I am sure. Both the Max and the other side initiate packets with
LCP protocol 0xfd, compressed packets.

Yes, it is very possibly their fault. And I am always ready to accuse
Windows of a problem -- you have already noticed by feelings about it
:-)
