Correct.  Ascend units require MP+ or BACP on the other end.

To make your lives easier, since Ascend is admittedly a major client
vendor, ComOS 3.8 will have BACP.

The Zyxel isn't the only one that doesn't need these - the Office Router
doesn't either.  Nor does the Bitsurfer.
