This involves knowing about "high" and "low" power modes and the undocumented registers :) But seriously - we have been doing some testing, and "our man at Rockwell" has been keeping me up to date with developments. On the server side there is an undocumented register - which I will not divulge on a public mailing list as it does affect international regulatory things like the FCC regulations - that allow you to force high power modem connections. This has however subsequently then broken v.34 in early testing - I think that has been solved. (UK k56flex ISPs etc should contact the Ascend office to get on a low volume mailing list re UK specific issues - bona fide ISPs and modem makers only please) What should happen, and people with a better understanding should correct me here, is the the client modem (in later code - 1.0+ ?) should attempt to negotiate high power mode during the call startup IFF the client modem has a country code allowing it to do so. I found some information at the Intertex site regarding another (different) undocumented registers that allows you to ask the client side to try high power mode... let me get the URL... it's a README file in a code release - here is the extract: "Disabling the K56 connect speed learning mechanism by S240=15 (low power mode) and 243=15 (high power mode) now works."
