Ahh excellent - a fellow Aussie! > Adam, unfortunately you have to face up to certain facts of life. (I > know, I've been there). > > An Ascend Max, a Bay 8000 or even a cisco 5200 are all really "access > servers" not for mainline routing. for sure. We have built our own routers over time as once you start needing some serious routing, the CISCO's are the way to go, but, you are paying 10x's the price than what we think is normal. We just get a high end PC (PPRO 300 for eg.) and whack in several 100Mbs ethernet cards. They can run BGP with no problems. Also, the memory is damm cheap and you an use what ever interface you like! :) > > I know the cisco 5200 supports BGP, but from all decent reports I > have seen here in Australia, no one is their right mind users it. > Even Telstra wont run BGP on a 5200. > > If all your links are in the one location get yourself either a Bay > ARN or a Cisco 2500 series and run BGP 4 to your heart's desire. > Remember though to fully load up which ever device you buy, with the > max RAM capability (even if its more than you can afford - with the > prices here in Oz). > > BGP 4 is heaps of fun :( but be warned, there isn't anything like > Ascend's RUBB to help you, its the old cd trick (which I personally > hate so much). > Are you multi-homed up there? We do network management and VPN facilitiation - therefore the backbone (ours) needs to be efficient in the case of things like outages on one of the pops. BGP is the only thing (i know of) that will do the job (?). regards adam +-------------------------------------------------+ | Adam Neat |NOC Tel: 03-9887-1984 | | National Systems Manager |NOC Fax: 03-9801-8533 | | IPAX Systems - Australia |http://www.ipax.com.au| | Mobile: 0414-348-187 |adamneat@ipax.com.au | +-------------------------------------------------+ ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com To get FAQ'd: <http://www.nealis.net/ascend/faq>

References:

RE: (ASCEND) BGP 4 ?

From: "Gary Stern" <cairns@cairns.net.au>

Prev by Date: (ASCEND) pipe 50 password reset (fwd)

Next by Date: (ASCEND) fatal error index 2

Next by thread: (ASCEND) What the big ones do

Index(es):

Main

Thread
