are you sure this isn't just because of the design of your network?
you are probably using ip addresses for your dialup pool that
should actually be on the ethernet, in which case you are right,
this will cause things to appear not to work because your DNS server
(presumably on the same ethernet as the max) tries to send
a reply to the client (which it expects is on the ethernet also)
it sends an ARP for the MAC of the client and gets no reply.
many people have expressed their strong opinions on whether or not
proxy-arp should be used as a "routing protocol" in this way,
but that is an arguement best left in the list archives.
