(ASCEND) Max1800 5.0A=>6.1.7 upgrade misadventures

Today, when I tried to upgrade a Max1800 from version 5.0A(b.m18)
to version 6.1.7, the pilot number to the box stopped working and
the serial hunt group no longer worked.

The BRIs are off of a 5ESS switch.  When we installed the lines
BellSouth couldn't get a UCD set up correctly without creating a 
serial huntgroup among the lines.  Because the UCD pilot wouldn't
work with a calling card, we publish the first number in the serial
huntgroup.  All this worked until I upgraded the box.

After upgrading, I could no longer get more than 1 user on the
box with the serial huntgroup number, and further attempts caused
a 'CALL REJECTED/OTHER DEST' error.  I tried to down-grade (first
to 5.0Ap48, then to 5.0Ap38), but it still got the same error.

I worked on the AnsN# setting to no avail.

I finally had to downgrade back to 5.0A to get things working again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
