We did some extensive testing of various v.90 modems (including those
we got through Ascend with the k56flex promotion). Max running v.90 code
from 6.1.3 or later ... all modems flashed to their latest greatest code
level,
and tested at six different locations.

For the most part, all modems connected at the same speeds +/- one
speed setting. None of the modems had any problem staying connected either.

We did notice that some modems do end up retraining - I guess its better
to loose 500 ms to a second and keep your connection up than just drop it.
The modem that seems to be the most reliable is the 3Com / US Robotics
Courier v.everything, with its latest v.90 code. (Its unfortunately though
that
3Com makes you stand on your head to get a v.90 upgrade, flash it,
connect to their BBS, etc etc etc And even worse a fair percentage of
the modems that should be flashable seem to have to be sent back).

I've run a Courier v.everything and a Zoom 2849A side-by-side for
some time, and in my opinion the USR Courier modem performs better
(because all other things being equal better bit rate due to less
retrains?!).
Could be because of hardware DSP and other factors?

Interesting to read of the modem that wouldn't connect unless you
made it fall back to k56flex. We had this kind of problem with one
of our part time people at home ... had the phone company out three times;
the modem had no problem making X2 connections to someone else
with 3Com boxes but just steady tone and no connect into our Maxen.

There were various resolutions for this:
 - ordered and installed an additional phone line ... it was cleaner, it
worked
 - disabled something on the modem (don't remember: something with an 8 in
it?)
 - upgraded both the modem and Max to latest v.90 code
(still works better on "clean" new phone line)
